ปัจจุบันยังไม่มีวัคซีนป้องกันไวรัสตับอักเสบซี ผู้ที่ได้รับเชื้อไวรัสตับอักเสบซีส่วนใหญ่จะไม่มีอาการผิดปกติ กว่าจะทราบว่าติดเชื้อไวรัสตับอักเสบซี ตับมักเริ่มเสื่อมมากแล้ว ซึ่งพบได้โดยการตรวจเลือดเท่านั้น ผู้ที่เป็นและไม่ได้รับการรักษาจะกลายเป็นไวรัสตับอักเสบซีเรื้อรัง และในที่สุดจะเกิดภาวะแทรกซ้อนที่สำคัญ ได้แก่ ตับแข็ง และมะเร็งตับ ในไวรัสตับอักเสบซีเป็นอาร์เอ็นเอไวรัสที่เป็นภัยเงียบที่คุกคามสุขภาพ ผู้ที่ติดเชื้ออาจมีอาการอ่อนเพลีย บางคนอาจมีอาการดีซ่าน ถ้าตรวจเลือดดูการทำงานของตับจะพบว่ามีการทำงานของตับผิดปกติ โดยเฉพาะการตรวจหาระดับ AST (SGOT) และ ALT (SGPT)
วิธีการป้องกันและดูแลควบคุมโรค
สามารถทำได้โดยการตรวจเลือด ซึ่งเป็นการตรวจหาภูมิต่อต้านไวรัสตับอักเสบซี หรือที่เรียกว่า "แอนติ เอช ซี วี" (Anti-HCV) ในรายที่ผลเป็นบวกควรตรวจยืนยันด้วยการตรวจหาไวรัสโดยตรง ผู้ที่ตรวจพบสามารถดำเนินชีวิตประจำวันได้ตามปกติ ควรพักผ่อนให้เพียงพอ รับประทานอาหารที่มีประโยชน์ และงดการดื่มสุราเพราะมีผลกับการทำงานของตับ ไวรัสตับอักเสบซี ไม่สามารถติดต่อจากการสัมผัส การรับประทานอาหาร และดื่มน้ำร่วมกัน ปัจจุบันมียารักษาการติดเชื้อไวรัสตับอักเสบซีเรื้อรัง ซึ่งสามารถรักษาให้หายขาดได้ ผลตอบสนองต่อการรักษาขึ้นกับสายพันธุ์ของไวรัส และถึงแม้จะยังไม่มีวัคซีนสำหรับป้องกันไวรัสตับอักเสบซี แต่การป้องกันการติดเชื้อเบื้องต้นด้วยตนเองเป็นสิ่งสำคัญที่สุด เพื่อสุขอนามัยที่ดีทั้งกับตนเองและส่วนรวม และหลีกเลี่ยงการสัมผัสเลือดและสารคัดหลั่งของผู้อื่น
ไวรัสตับอักเสบซี สามารถติดต่อจากผู้ที่เป็นพาหะได้หลายทาง ได้แก่
สัมผัสเลือด สารคัดหลั่งของร่างกาย ได้แก่ เลือด น้ำเหลือง น้ำเหลืองจากเลือด เหงื่อ ไขมันจากต่อมเหงื่อ หนอง น้ำไขสันหลัง น้ำตา น้ำในช่องต่างๆ ของดวงตา ขี้หู น้ำมูก ขี้มูก น้ำลาย เสมหะ เสลดน้ำนม อาเจียน น้ำดี น้ำจากช่องคลอด น้ำอสุจิ นอกจากนี้ ยังมีน้ำต่างๆ ในโพรงของอวัยวะต่างๆ เช่น น้ำในช่องท้อง และน้ำในช่องปอดและปัสสาวะ
ใช้เข็มฉีดยาร่วมกัน เช่น ผู้เสพสารเสพติด
ได้รับเลือดที่มีผู้บริจาคก่อน พ.ศ. 2535 เพราะการตรวจคัดกรองไวรัสตับอักเสบซีในช่วงนั้นยังไม่ดีเท่าที่ควร แต่ปัจจุบันมีการตรวจคัดกรองเชื้อไวรัสตับอักเสบซีในเลือด ทุกถุงก่อนจะนำมาให้กับผู้ป่วย
ทารกได้รับเชื้อจากมารดาขณะคลอด
